Chapter Eight

“You were a hot little number, weren’t you? I certainly can’t blame Duscene for mating with you. With that sort of sex going on I’m not at all surprised he fell for you.”

Sarina clamped her mouth shut. A thousand retorts wound their way through her head, but she refused to give this man another moment’s entertainment. She turned away and instantly found herself facing the fury of his anger.

“Don’t you ever turn your back to me!” he growled. His hand didn’t even move, but Sarina felt the sting of it across her cheek.

Furious that he’d even think to strike her, Sarina let white hot anger surge through her. She registered the shock in his eyes right before she blotted out everything around her in the white light of her own rage. When the light finally dimmed, she was someplace else entirely. She hadn’t moved an inch, but whatever, wherever she’d been had changed completely.

“I thought you might like to see where you’ll be staying for the considerable future.”

“What’d she offer you?” Sarina asked, knowing he probably wouldn’t answer her.

“Lilith?” he grinned. “Not much really. Although she did say something about specific members of your family. I considered it something comparable to letting her try one last time. She’ll end up here eventually either way, so I didn’t see the harm in giving her another chance.”

Sarina closed her eyes, silently praying for Brody and her sons, her extended family.

“He doesn’t hear you, you know.” The laugh that emanated from him was hoarse and grated on her nerves. “I do of course, but then, I don’t really give a rat’s ass. All I want is for as many of you hybrids to make it down here as possible. Given your nature, it’s likely you won’t end up anywhere else in the end, but I’m not one for taking chances myself. I like a sure bet and you, for one, are as sure as they get, honey.”

“So that’s it, then?” she asked, her voice betraying her anger, resentment, and sheer hopelessness.

“I’d apologize for your plight, but I’m not really one for being particularly sorry.” He grinned, slamming the door to a cell that would hold her prisoner until he wanted to let her go. It looked much like a prison cell with a solid, see-through wall on the front and the remaining walls were thick, solid, concrete. There was no toilet, no bed platform, just the walls that trapped her. She’d thought he was a dick before, but now she knew him for the purely evil bastard he was. She, like everyone she knew, had heard stories of the Devil. Most of them were so far out there that she’d assumed they were made to scare little children into behaving. Now she knew better and she couldn’t stop the shudder that ran through her.

“I’ll leave you to your thoughts for now. They can be just as delicious as the rest of you.”

Sarina watched him walk away, his laugh radiating pain along her nerves.
